Read-A-Thon April 2011

Today I will be busier than I had expected so I won’t be able to commit many hours of reading, but I do intend to continue with Danielle Trussoni’s Angelology and maybe begin a non-fiction.

Persephone Reading Weekend

I interrupt normal proceedings to tell you that I’ll be joining in on the Persephone Reading Weekend. It’s hosted by Claire and Verity.

I had doubled-up on posts in my schedule, even though I’ve been looking forward to it for the last two weeks somehow today it got forgotten. Luckily not for long. This weekend I intend to read The Victorian Chaise-Longue, no matter how worried I am about it. Helen’s review got me interested, but freaked, and another couple of reviews made both those feelings continue. Finally I have the word of one of the Persephone staff who warned me of the contents.

Suffice to say things don’t look bright for this weekend but I am going to give the book a go.

My boyfriend will be with me so I guess I can huddle against him if the book gets too scary.

Read-A-Thon October 2010

This is just a short post because I’m currently studying hard in lure of the weekend. Like last time I won’t be reading for very long and because of time restraints will probably not be online much, but I do have a couple of books in mind to choose from and these will be The Bohemian Girl by Kenneth Cameron and Angelology by Danielle Trussoni. I also have a short story collection by Maile Meloy, Half In Love that I may choose instead because I’m currently favouring quick reads over full-length novels.

Whether or not you are taking part in Read-A-Thon, what are your plans for the weekend?

The Fourth Book From Transworld

The book and packaging

Some time last week (my previous declaration of extreme detail being forgotten) I received my fourth and final Transworld book, After You by Julie Buxbaum. I’m a little confused by the cover – not because of the cover itself, but because I’d become so used to seeing the US one, which I believe is the hardcover here in the UK – and it took a few times of looking at it to remember that this is a book that I’ve been wanting to read since long before the challenge.

The cover is simple but it’s draw comes in the form of the quotations by Jodi Picoult and Marian Keyes, lauding Buxbaum’s previous release. The publishers certainly know what they’re doing here!

The Third Book From Transworld

The book and packaging

I received my third Transworld book, Second Hand Heart by Catherine Ryan Hyde, on Monday 16th August 2010. Yes, I’m getting all detailed now, evidence suggests recording dates is useful later.

The book appears to be an ARC which thrills me, I must confess I screeched a little when I saw it by the door, and it’s nicely produced. The cover is very smooth and it’s one of those books that falls open easily when nudged, in that totally fabulous way that doesn’t break the spine. The imprint is Black Swan which means good books to me, my previous ventures there being my first Transworld challenge book, Prep, and Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief.

The day before, I’d started Katherine Webb’s The Legacy, but I’d only got through a few pages so I’m going to allow myself to put it aside while I read Second Hand Heart. I refuse to feel guilty for this.
